What is SAP Basis?

SAP Basis is the middleware and administration foundation beneath every SAP application. It sits between the operating system and database on one side and the business modules on the other, providing the runtime environment in which ABAP and, historically, Java programs execute. Without a healthy Basis layer, functional areas such as finance, logistics, or HR simply cannot run, which is why Basis is often described as the plumbing of an SAP landscape.

The discipline spans a wide set of tasks: installing and patching systems, tuning memory and work processes, managing the transport pipeline that moves changes from development to production, scheduling background jobs, administering users and authorizations, and handling client copies, refreshes, and upgrades. Basis teams also monitor system health, plan capacity, and coordinate database and operating-system administration so that performance and availability targets are consistently met.

As SAP shifts toward S/4HANA, cloud, and RISE, the Basis role has broadened rather than shrunk.
