SAP MDG, or Master Data Governance, is SAP's solution for centrally creating, governing, and maintaining master data such as customers, suppliers, materials, and finance data. It uses workflow-driven processes, validation rules, and data quality controls to keep master data consistent and trusted across connected systems. It runs on an SAP ERP foundation.
SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) is SAP's solution for governing the creation and maintenance of critical master data. Master data — such as business partners, customers, suppliers, materials, and financial objects like cost centers and accounts — underpins nearly every business process. When it is inconsistent or duplicated, processes and analytics suffer. MDG provides a centralized, controlled way to manage this data and distribute it to connected systems.
MDG works through governance processes: change requests flow through configurable workflows with clear roles, approvals, validations, and data-quality checks before data is activated and replicated. It supports central governance, where data is mastered in the MDG hub, as well as consolidation and mass processing to clean up and harmonize existing records. Prebuilt content covers common domains, and the model can be extended to custom objects.
Because MDG runs on an SAP ERP foundation, often within or alongside S/4HANA, and distributes data to many downstream systems, it sits at the center of the landscape. Setting up its data models, workflows, and replication, and integrating it reliably across systems, is a significant technical effort. Sound master-data governance strengthens the foundation for migrations, analytics, and AI initiatives alike.
