SAP Activate is SAP's implementation methodology for deploying S/4HANA and other SAP solutions. It combines a phased project framework, ready-to-use best practices, and guided configuration tools. Its phases — typically Discover, Prepare, Explore, Realize, Deploy, and Run — give teams a structured, repeatable path from planning to go-live and operations.
SAP Activate is the methodology SAP recommends for implementing and adopting its modern solutions, most notably S/4HANA in both cloud and on-premise editions. It replaced older approaches such as ASAP and the SAP Launch methodology, bringing together three pillars: pre-delivered best practices, guided configuration and tools, and a consistent, agile-friendly project methodology that teams can tailor to their scenario.
The methodology is organized into phases. Discover and Prepare cover strategy, planning, and project setup; Explore uses fit-to-standard workshops to validate best practices against business needs; Realize builds and tests the solution iteratively; Deploy handles cutover and go-live; and Run focuses on operations and continuous improvement. This structure supports both greenfield implementations and system conversions, with content adapted to each path.
For an SAP program, Activate provides a common language and roadmap that keeps functional, technical, and change-management workstreams aligned. The technical and Basis activities — landscape setup, system provisioning, transports, migration, and cutover planning — map directly onto the Realize and Deploy phases, so a well-run methodology and a well-run technical team reinforce each other throughout the project.
