SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform) is SAP's platform-as-a-service for building extensions, integrations, analytics, and AI around SAP applications. It is where custom development moves under a 'clean core' strategy — keeping the S/4HANA core standard while innovating on the platform beside it.
SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform) is SAP's cloud platform-as-a-service. It brings together four capability areas: application development and automation (including low-code and the ABAP environment), integration (the Integration Suite that succeeds PI/PO), data and analytics (SAP Analytics Cloud, Datasphere), and artificial intelligence (SAP AI Core and the Joule assistant).
BTP's strategic role is to enable a 'clean core.' Instead of modifying the S/4HANA core with custom ABAP — which makes upgrades slow and risky — organizations move extensions and custom logic onto BTP, where they integrate with S/4HANA through stable APIs. This keeps the digital core standard and upgrade-ready while still allowing differentiation.
Because BTP is where integration, extension, and AI now live, adopting it is a technical-architecture decision as much as a development one: it affects landscape design, connectivity, identity, security, and how a migration to S/4HANA or RISE is planned.
